Why Students Struggle with the Literature IB Internal Assessment

The Literature Internal Assessment is unique because it moves away from a traditional essay, demanding high-level oral synthesis. You are expected to deliver a presentation and participate in a subsequent discussion with your teacher about how the texts of your choice relate to a Global Issue. This shift in format creates specific anxieties that often prevent students from achieving the top marks they would normally be capable of.

«Not finding a valid Global Issue.» The core of the IB IA is the «Global Issue»—a concept that must be broad, transnational, and significantly present in both of your chosen texts. With the help of one of our tutors, you’ll be able to choose the perfect issue for your interests.

«Connecting two different texts feels forced.» In the Literature course, you must connect a work originally written in English (or your target language) with a work in translation. Depending on your prefered topics, we can help you choose two texts that correlate perfectly.

«The 15-minute timing creates panic.» Unlike a written draft you can edit indefinitely, the literature internal assessment is a live performance. You have exactly 10 minutes to speak and 5 minutes for questions. We’re here to practice with you, to make sure this doesn’t happen.

«I don’t know what the examiner wants in the Q&A.» The 5-minute teacher query session is not a casual chat; it is an assessment of your knowledge. But we know what the examiners want, allowing us to prepare you in advance.

What does the Literature IA Actually Require?

To succeed in your IB literature internal assessment, you must move beyond simple plot summary and demonstrate a sophisticated understanding of how authorial choices shape meaning. As previously stated, The Individual Oral (IO) is an oral presentation that explores how two of your studied works present a specific Global Issue. This presentation is, exactly, 15 minutes long and typically counts for 20% (SL) or 30% (HL) of your final grade. That’s why we’re here to help you prepare all of your materials hand in hand with a professional literature graduate as you tutor who can help you with the following criteria:

knowledge and understanding

Knowledge, Understanding, and Interpretation (10 points)

You must show excellent knowledge of the extracts chosen and the works as a whole, drawing persuasive conclusions about their connection to your global issue.

Reflections on Planning and Progress Form

Analysis and Evaluation (10 points)

You must analyze how the author presents the issue. This means discussing literary devices, stylistic choices, and authorial intent—not just what happens in the story.

Critical Thinking

Focus and Organization (10 points)

Your argument must be cohesive, balanced between both texts, and strictly focused on the Global Issue without digressing into other matters. You only have 15 minutes, do not beat around the bush!

presentation

Language (10 points)

Your register must be academic and professional. Vocabulary should be precise, varied, and appropriate for literary analysis. But, overall, you must present yourself with confidence.

Our teachers are professionals with years of experience in the field, and in the clasroom both as outstanding IB students, as well as excelent teachers who know the ins and outs of this whole process.

Stage 1: Strategic Selection and The Global Issue

  • We help you refine a Global Issue that is Transnational (Relevant across cultures), Significant (Central to the texts, not a minor detail) and Analyzable (Rich in literary evidence).

Stage 2: The Outline and Scripting

  • We help you create memory-triggering bullet points to stay on track and ensure balanced assessment between original and translated text.

Stage 3: Extract Analysis

  • We dive deep into your chosen extracts (max 40 lines each), identifying the «micro» literary devices and connecting them to the «macro» themes of the entire work. This enables discussion on extracts & entire works.

Stage 4: Rehearsal and Q&A Prep

  • We conduct mock IAs: present to tutors, get timed, improve pacing, and handle ‘Teacher Questions’ smoothly for better composure.
