What Is English Language and Literature in the IB Diploma Programme?

Language and Literature in the International Baccalaureate is distinct from a standard English course because it bridges the gap between literary art and real-world communication. While traditional literature courses focus exclusively on novels, poetry, and plays, this curriculum requires you to investigate how language is used to create meaning in a vast array of contexts.

In this course, you will explore three core areas of exploration: Readers, Writers, and Texts; Time and Space; and Intertextuality. You must demonstrate the ability to analyze how “non-literary texts” (like advertisements, blogs and speeches) persuade and inform mass audiences while simultaneously performing deep literary analysis on canonical literary works.

Whether you are preparing for the Standard Level or Higher Level, success requires a sharp critical eye that doesn’t just come naturally without a teaher’s help. One of our tutor will help you learn to identify language features, stylistic devices, and rhetorical strategies, understanding how they shape meaning and influence the reader.

This rigorous training not only prepares you for your IB exams but also builds the critical thinking skills essential for university-level research and communication.

Themes that you’ll Explore in Depth with your Tutor

Our teaching approach goes beyond simple text comprehension. We train you to think like a linguist and a literary critic simultaneously. By connecting theoretical concepts of communication with practical examples from global media and literature, our analytical teaching style ensures you understand the “why” and “how” behind every text. All of this hand in hand with a teacher who’s not only a graduate expert from the best universities, but is also experienced in dealing with all the demands and requirements of the IB Program. Here are the specific curriculum areas we help you master in our Language and Literature sessions:

Analyzing Non-Literary Texts and Mass Media

A major component of this subject’s syllabus is the analysis of non-literary works. We teach you how to deconstruct media textsβ€”such as opinion columns, advertisements, and infographicsβ€”by identifying visual codes, rhetorical devices, and audience positioning. You’ll learn to understand how mass media shapes public opinion and reflects cultural values.

Literary Analysis and Contextual Understanding

We’ll guide you into exploring the complex relationship between literary texts and their contexts. You will examine how a work’s meaning is influenced by the time and space in which it was written and received. Our instructors will help you master the comparative skills needed to analyze how different authors approach similar issues or themes across various forms and periods.

The Individual Oral

The Internal Assessment (Individual Oral) is often the most anxiety-inducing part of the course. We’ll help you master the skill of connecting a “global issue” to both a literary and a non-literary work. You will also learn how to structure a coherent, 10 minute oral argument that balances close analysis of extracts with a broader discussion of the chosen texts as a whole.

We Help you with Your Extended Essay and Internal Assessment in Language and Literature

Creating a standout Extended Essay or scoring highly on your Internal Assessment requires more than just good writing; it requires a deep understanding of specific IB assessment criteria. Many students struggle to find a topic that allows for the required depth of linguistic or literary analysis. Standard Level (SL) and Higher Level (HL)

While both levels share the same core skills, the Higher Level (HL) course demands greater depth. HL students must study six works (compared to four at SL) and complete an additional assessment component: the HL Essay, a 1200-word written analysis. We help HL students manage this increased workload.

Core Topics and Curriculum Content

The curriculum is built around three areas: Readers, writers and texts, Time and space, and Intertextuality: connecting texts. We ensure you understand how these concepts apply to the diverse range of text types you will encounter, literary and non-literary, demonstrating a comprehensive command of the subject.

Practical Application and Assessment Components

Theoretical knowledge must be applied effectively to succeed. For the Internal Assessment, you must verbally analyze how two texts present a global issue. For the external exams, you must apply your skills to unseen non-literary texts (Paper 1) and compare two literary works you have studied (Paper 2). We provide the practical training needed to execute these tasks under timed conditions.

Assessment Criteria and Academic Expectations

You are evaluated on four criteria: Knowledge and Understanding, Analysis and Evaluation, Focus and Organization, and Language. Our instructors are experts in these criteria, often having experience with IB moderation. We review your work against official standards, providing feedback to help you refine your writing style, vocabulary and argument structure.
